Why we are hiring this role
Source is revolutionizing how developers manage data in our edge-first world. As the creators of DefraDB, a groundbreaking peer-to-peer, edge-native database, Source is building the infrastructure that will power the next generation of distributed applications — from mobile, IoT, and autonomous systems to AI, space, and beyond.
With over 75% of data now generated at the edge, traditional cloud-dependent architectures have become a bottleneck. Source’s stack enables developers to build applications that function seamlessly offline, sync peer-to-peer without central servers, and maintain cryptographic verification across distributed environments.
As our platform matures and adoption accelerates, we’ve reached an inflection point where clear, consistent, and developer-centric documentation is critical to scaling understanding and adoption. Our technology spans distributed databases, cryptography, P2P networking, and developer infrastructure — all of which demand documentation that is deeply technical yet approachable.
That’s why we’re hiring a Lead Technical Writer & Documentation Engineer — to design, lead, and evolve the way Source communicates knowledge to developers, integrators, and partners across the entire ecosystem.
Why this role matters
Documentation is the first experience developers have with Source. It’s not just reference material — it’s how our ideas propagate, how our technologies are understood, and how trust in the platform is built.
As Lead Technical Writer & Documentation Engineer, you will own our entire documentation and knowledge strategy, from public developer docs to internal engineering handbooks. You’ll work closely with our Core Development, DevEx, and DevRel teams to ensure our documentation is always current, consistent, and truly developer-first.
You will lead the creation of technical content that bridges the gap between distributed-systems engineering and practical developer experience — automating documentation where possible, integrating Docs as Code methodologies, and exploring the use of LLMs to assist in content planning, contextualizing core development, and .
This is not a passive “technical writer” role. It’s a leadership position at the intersection of engineering, communication, and developer experience — shaping how knowledge flows through the company and out into the world.
Responsibilities
- Lead the documentation and technical writing teams, defining long-term vision, standards, and workflows for internal and external docs.
 - Collaborate directly with engineering and product teams to translate complex technical concepts into clear, structured, developer-friendly documentation.
 - Design and implement Docs-as-Code pipelines — including automated build, linting, testing, and versioning of documentation alongside code.
 - Establish and maintain the documentation architecture across multiple repositories and developer touchpoints (Docusaurus, GitHub, internal handbooks, SDK docs, API references, etc.).
 - Integrate emerging AI/LLM tooling into documentation planning, summarization, and content management processes.
 - Oversee internal knowledge management and ensure internal documentation supports onboarding, cross-team learning, and engineering velocity.
 - Define documentation quality metrics (accuracy, freshness, accessibility) and continuously improve through developer feedback.
 - Advocate for documentation as a critical part of the developer experience — ensuring every new feature, SDK, or API is shipped with first-class documentation.

Requirements for the role
Applicants without explicit previous engineering experience likely won’t be considered. If you still feel like you are a fit for this role, please include a justification on your application.
- 5+ years of experience in technical writing, developer documentation, or developer-facing content roles.
 - 3+ years of experience as a software developer, technical engineer, or equivalent hands-on technical background.
 - Experience leading or mentoring documentation or developer education teams.
 - Deep familiarity with Docs-as-Code approaches and documentation automation workflows.
 - Proficiency with static-site generators and developer documentation platforms (e.g., Docusaurus, MkDocs, Hugo).
 - Experience working closely with engineers and designers in fast-paced, startup or scale-up environments.
 - Strong editorial instincts — able to maintain clarity and consistency across large, evolving bodies of documentation.
 - Interest in or experience applying LLMs or generative AI to technical documentation or content pipelines.
 - Familiarity with distributed systems, databases, or developer tooling ecosystems is strongly preferred.

Why Join Source
This is a rare opportunity to build and lead a documentation function at one of the most innovative companies in edge computing.
As Lead Technical Writer & Documentation Engineer, you’ll define how Source communicates its ideas to the world — from developer onboarding to advanced architecture guides. You’ll work at the core of a team pioneering new paradigms in distributed systems, helping shape not just documentation, but the entire developer experience.
You’ll have the freedom to experiment with modern documentation pipelines, integrate AI-assisted authoring tools, and establish standards that will influence how decentralized infrastructure is documented and understood across the industry.
This role offers exceptional growth potential — both in leadership scope and technical depth — as Source continues to expand its footprint across edge AI, IoT, autonomous systems, and verifiable data management.
