Mission Interoperable: Data on the Edge

Distributed networks are still in their infancy. We, techno-sapien, have only just begun to explore the decentralization of our collective stacks, and the benefits it offers. Distributed application of computing resources is much of a technological advance as the computer itself. And it’s one we - society - are still figuring out. 

It makes sense. Making software applications run effectively across multiple devices is necessarily harder than making it run off one device. The variables, by their very nature, begin to stack up, and even simple operations become enormously complex. Not everything is written in Assembly. Not every hardware configuration processes 1s and 0s the same way. Abstraction is part of the process. Weaving neat tapestries of elegant adaptable code so that it executes on particular hardware setups and software environments is the raison d’etre of programming itself. There’s a reason the PS3 had very few good games - try figuring that architecture out on a gaming industry crunch deadline. Virtual environments and the complexities of state machines make this abstraction process even more complicated. 

Add in a huge variety of differing cloud environments, and the perils of vendor lock, whereby all your software development becomes chained to the demands of a particular provider.  Then the challenge of making our collective orchestras of transistors sing in unison becomes near-Sisyphean, with the laughing Olympians of centralized services watching on, their sirens luring your ship onto their jagged rocks.

Interoperability as Standard

Interoperability by default is the key to overcoming this tangled maze of hardware and software environments. As we seek to build distributed networks that are truly sustainable and deliver the sovereignty, autonomy and privacy we need, organizations can’t be frittering vast tracts of energy and finance on readjusting every update they put out to meet the demands of the edge device environments they are deploying to. 

In a smart city, if the traffic lights of Westside come from a different vendor than the traffic lights of Eastside, that does not mean you should have to write the code to color in red, yellow and green twice, thrice, or twenty times. You don’t want to dump sewage into the river and poison the children bathing in the summer sun just because the logic that governs the pumps can’t be read by Sector 5’s command module. The road sensors tracking smart car traffic and predicting weather patterns shouldn’t all have to be uniform. To build distributed networks that work, you need interoperability by default. Including - and especially - when it comes to data management. 

DefraDB makes Dev Easy

Managing data across software and hardware supplied by multiple vendors is essential to allow distributed networks to proliferate in the right way. Migrate Somewhere Better

LensVM, our bi-directional data migration/transformation engine, means that software whose data is managed by DefraDB is interoperable with third party software, meaning organizations who already suffer from a degree of vendor lock, or who have their own proprietary codebase running things, are still able to be fully interoperable. LensVM lets data be mapped to existing software install bases for frictionless interoperability between what DefraDB offers and what you already have. LensVM can also assist developers in migrating that data to DefraDB or - perhaps just as crucially for some - getting data offloaded from DefraDB to another database that is part of their existing cloud stack.
