The OPEN Quest Origin Story

// October 25, 2023

In the beginning, there was mainly a mix of hope and darkness.

The beginning of what, you ask?

Well, if we go back — like way back — to the early days of our story (i.e., the internet and what many refer to as web1), there was a free-flowing exchange of information, data, and ideas that weren’t controlled by a single, potentially evil company or platform. That went well for a while, setting the stage for a drastic, inspiring, and wholly chaotic reimagining of humanity — from business to culture, communication, politics, and beyond.

Then came web2, which evolved the internet from read-only to read-write, enabling people to create their own content and communicate with others via a new wave of applications, setting the stage for the era of social media. Regardless of whether or not you’ve seen The Social Network, you should have a good idea that this evolution changed our world — and our entire understanding of what it means to be human — for better or worse. Quickly and surely, greed, control, misinformation, and a lack of true ownership, security, and self-sovereignty got in the way of the truly free and user-centric early web once promised.

Fast forward again, and we find ourselves, Source Network, as proud proponents for empowering the true vision of our world’s next technological movement, web3. Through the lens of truly decentralized data management, we are building a future where we have genuine freedom over where our data exists, how it’s used, and how it can benefit us, versus the centralized powers who took the brilliant and hopeful idea of the internet and turned into yet another commodified, big-brother-esque playground for power-hungry, CEOs who idea of creating change is a cage match live streamed on a social network that one of them recently reduced to a single letter.

But while we build for a better internet and future for application users — and web3 developers — we must continue improving the systems that guide our products and communities through better, product-driven communities. And in web3, as in life, community is always a tricky word. How do we balance empowering communities while providing them value in an engaging, potentially profitable, useful, and fun way?

How about a gamified community platform? Low-hanging fruit, but in web3, the combination of blockchain and game is catnip for critics. We’ve witnessed how over-emphasizing gains can cripple on-chain communities if the benefits and experience aren’t balanced and built with care. Thankfully for all of you potential Sourcerers, building things with care (and deep focus on user-centric products) is what we do best here at Source Network

So without further adieu, we’d like to introduce OPEN Quest, a new strategic gamified community layer that revolves around the Source Network community, products, content, and much more.

OPEN Quest offers a new path forward for engaging users to join a product-focused web3 community where they can learn, build, connect, and, yes, earn. Our mission with OPEN Quest is to incentivize these actions through a nod back to some of the magic that embodied those early years of the web, where curiosity, experimentation, excitement, and a careful balance of simplicity and innovation reigned supreme.

Yours in web3,

The Source(erer) Network Team
